Certain Athletes are given the privilege of scholarships that will pay most If not all of the expenses in the college they attend. It is said that that the Ed O’Bannon case will soon have a decision, this decision can result in college players to be paid up to 5 grand. Notre Dame a University with large amounts of History in football including movies, says that if players were to be paid they would back out and make their own conference, President of Notre Dame John Jenkins threatens to leave College Football. Op Ed Journalist Joe Nocera says “c’mon, Notre Dame. What are you afraid of?” However my stance on the topic is in favor of both sides.
To begin with, in 2009 Ed O’Bannon a former basketball player from the University of Central los Angeles sued the N.C.A.A. for the use of his name and social image in video games. The N.C.A.A. says that amateur players shouldn’t have to be paid. It was decided that what the N.C.A.A. was doing was illegal and that universities could pay there players without the N.C.A.A interfering, still trying to be appealed, much can happen. Notre dame retaliates, saying that if they have to pay the players Notre dame football in big college sports is gone. They will start their own conference. Joe Nocera’s views on the topic is that Notre dames reaction doesn’t make sense, Notre dame could easily say no and not pay the players, but to back out of football when the foundation of Notre Dame was built on the sport, literally, is just blowing things out of proportion.
In Addition to the Ed O’Bannon Case and Joe Nocera’s view on the topic, Notre Dame is a private catholic school in Indiana with an average cost of Attendance around $47,929 a year. The university is extensivley known around the nation, earning a degree from there is a privilege as it is. Football is also a very big part of the school as well as other sports. Students around the nation have been and will be scouted for scholarships in football; Scholarships will cover for most if not the entire cost of their college attendance. Paying players that already were given such an opportunity to play at a higher level and earn a degree in such an ostentatious, over the top, extravagant school like Notre dame is absurd. However these players don’t have to be paid if the university says they don’t want to pay them, they should use the money and help the school. Not only would it look good for the school but for the players and how they can give back. Happiness and success begins when people being to give back rather than receive.
